Advice on Career Change

21st Century CVs - Giving You an Unfair Advantage

They say a change is good as a rest, but changing your career is far from simple, but it can revitalise and re-invigorate your life, provided, of course, you are changing jobs or changing industries for the right reasons. Perhaps the best way to start is to look at your present job in great detail and discover exactly why a new start is required. It is essential to understand precisely why your present employment is unrewarding. Without an indepth look at the present, the future may not be much different, and you will find the same sort of problems in the new job.

There are so many factors that make a job special or maybe not so special. The most common reason to jump ship is to improve one's financial position and this is a very valid reason. The second most usual reason is to change area or geographic location and this may be for many explanations. If not for these practical motives, then it is most important to identify the real reason for your unhappiness and take introspective look at your present working life. A change in direction may not be right for you.

It is quite possible that you have outgrown the job and it has become boring and undemanding, or that maybe it is too demanding and onerous. It can be the workplace itself that has caused the problems and this may be it's situation (too much commuting), the lack of promotion prospects or the people you spend most of your life with (your work-mates). If it is the latter, then you may find that the grass is not always greener and that your new work colleagues are even worse.

In any event it is a good time to take stock and look at your career as objectively as possible, so that you can at least decide where you are before undertaking a career overhaul or change of industry. A very easy way of doing this is to make a list of the benefits and disadvantages of your present work life. If, for example, promotion is available currently, it may be time-wasting to move now, or if training is needed maybe this is provided for at the present job. It may well be that you wish to undertake an entire career change, but this decision can only really be made once you have looked deeply into the job prospects.

Once, therefore, you know exactly why you want to change, it will be much easier to decide what job will really meet your new criteria. Any successful job search requires a new self-awareness and an ability to see yourself as others see you. Maybe now is a good time to speak with all those people who really know you and listen to their view of you within the job context. Employers are looking for a range of skills and attributes and in order to be a successful job applicant you must know exactly which skills and competencies apply to you. It will be most worthwhile considering what skills you use in the present post; if you have skills that are not used then you have your answer - a new career elsewhere! Most people spend the most of their life at work, which to most people will sound awful. If you are one of those majority then maybe it is the right time to look for new horizons and plunge into the job market and find the career that really suits you. Unfortunately there is little point in knowing what you want, if you can't find and get the job you deserve. In order to give yourself the best shot at the job you want, you must present yourself in the best possible light. A CV that hits that spot is the way to market yourself in the modern world, so that the potential employer can easily see your skills.

A good job search is employer-led not applicant led, and the quality of the rest of your working life depends on your ability to find the right employer for you. This entails some hefty research as job advertisements or descriptions do not say much about the employer, merely which skills they require. The internet and trade publications can tell you more about the company. If you know friends in that sector then they should be able to help you by telling you exactly what is entailed in the job.

If you are changing job sectors or changing industries then you will need to spend even more time on research to see if you have those extra skills. Your lack of experience in that new industry will obviously count against you and may result in lower wages initially. However, your new found enthusiasm may counter this somewhat and with training should be able to offer much to your new boss. You will certainly need the best CV to actively promote you in this new work environment.
